Formulas are special fields that are disabled but calculate their value based on values from other fields. The field only calculates once you save the data. So if you do not see a value immediately, save your form. Since a formula is represented as another field, such as a number, those same features apply.
Why can't I see the value after save?: Formulas will only calculate once all dependent fields have values and the data is saved.
